How to Find the Right Size for Your Baby

How to Find the Right Size for Your Baby

Choosing clothing for a preterm baby can feel overwhelming — especially when your baby is growing in ways that don’t always follow charts or expectations. At Melo + Rose, we believe sizing should feel reassuring, not stressful.

This guide is here to help you choose a size with confidence, knowing that every baby’s journey is unique.

Start With Where Your Baby Is Now

When it comes to preemie clothing, current size matters more than birth weight. Many babies gain length before they fill out, and growth can happen quickly and unpredictably.

We recommend choosing a size based on:

  • Your baby’s current weight
  • How your baby is growing (length vs. fullness)
  • Whether your baby is beginning to wear clothing regularly

Weight ranges are a guide — not a rule.

Understanding Melo + Rose Sizing

Our pieces are thoughtfully proportioned for real preemie wear, with comfort and security at the center of every design. Check out our size guide here.

Ultra Preemie (3.5–5 lb)
Designed for very small babies who are beginning to wear clothing. This size fits close through the arms and body, with gentle extra leg length to allow room for early, unpredictable growth spurts.

Preemie (5–7 lb)
A classic preemie fit for babies who are growing steadily and filling out. Secure, soft, and comfortable without excess fabric.

Newborn (7–9 lb)
Ideal for babies transitioning out of preemie sizing. Thoughtfully sized to avoid the oversized feel common in standard newborn clothing.

Why We Design With Gentle Growth in Mind

Preterm babies often grow in length before they gain weight. That’s why some Melo + Rose styles include slightly extended length, while maintaining a snug fit where it matters most.

This helps:

  • Reduce frequent size changes
  • Keep clothing comfortable between growth spurts
  • Support longer wear during an already tender time

It’s a small detail — but one designed with care.

When in Doubt

If your baby is near the top of a weight range or growing quickly, sizing up can offer a bit more flexibility. If your baby is smaller or just beginning to wear clothes, a closer fit may feel more comforting.

And always remember: there is no “wrong” choice — only what feels best for your baby right now.

Our Promise

Every Melo + Rose piece is designed with intention, empathy, and real preemie experience in mind. We’re honored to be part of your baby’s early days, wherever you are on the journey.
